Site overview

This site from the beginning of the Incipient Jomon period (13,000 BC) is located on a fluvial terrace at an altitude of 26 m on the left bank of the Kanita River flowing into Mutsu Bay on the central eastern side of the Tsugaru Peninsula in Aomori Prefecture.

Potshards and arrowheads have been unearthed along with stone tools exhibiting characteristics of the Paleolithic period. Radiocarbon dating of carbonized material adhering to a potshard indicates an age of 12,680 ± 140 – 13,780 ± 170 yrB.P., suggesting the item was made around 16,500 years ago. A Mikoshiba-Chojakubo stone tool assemblage unearthed together with the potshards shows characteristics of the final phase of the Paleolithic period.

The potshards with the earliest characteristics have no impressions, marks indicating rope attachment or other markings. These artifacts are considered to help clarify the origins of pottery as an important element in the establishment of the Jomon culture.

Observation of potshard distribution helps to paint a picture of living environments centering on pottery. As no pillar holes, hollows or underground holes have been found at the site, these ancient dwellers are thought to have lived in mobile tents or similar. A compact and functional living environment is presumed, and no other remains have been found. These characteristics suggest that the people here used land minimally rather than building structures and developing land, and adapted to the natural environment. This indicates a transitional process to the permanent settlements of early Jomon culture.
